Glitch art by Katherina “Kate the Cursed” Jesek

VHSpunk Visions

2/5/21 - ongoing

A series of 1/1 completely analog animated glitch art cards with the CRT border as part of the artwork.

ANALOG AESTHETICS

1/17/21 - ongoing

My first series of art cards designed for Paras.id. I use a 1991 My First Sony video drawing toy to create analog neo-memphis abstractions, and edit them with various analog hardware I’ve been collecting. They’re captured from a sideways 8” SONY PVM in such a way that the CRT frame is part of the artwork, effectively standardizing the border while also capturing the reflections and light changes of the analog medium.

CORRUPTED NOSTALGIA

12/22/20 - ongoing

Can happy memories and trauma coexist? Have you ever been nostalgic for a past that never existed?

INTERIM

12/15/20 - 12/22/20

Playing with animation, focusing on color palettes. Dark themes for the darkest time of year.

NEON FANTASY

12/7/20 - 12/17/20

Why is fantasy always so drab? When I read fantasy, I see vivid colors and bright magic. This series is my attempt at combining a more futuristic ‘neon lights’ aesthetic with fantasy imagery in order to pull it out of the medieval period.

RETROFUTURIST TRADITIONS

11/28/20 - ongoing

This long-running series follows my interest in artists and art movements who came before by studying them through a lens of contemporary, retro-futuristic art and synthesizing them with other styles.

RADIATION SICKNESS

11/17/20 - 12/6/20

This series seeks to capture my various mental images of the surreal yet melancholy moments of nuclear beauty as a plutonium warhead detonates in the distance - the calm before the storm of mutually assured destruction.

This series makes heavy use of analog textures captured by a completely original process - light painting fractal transformations and circuitbent video sources with electron beams on a 27” Sony Trinitron CRT TV. Those textures are then carefully layered in image editing software with stock photos and various other textures I cook up to create the signature look of this series.

ELECTRO HUMMINGBIRD

10/27/20 - 11/05/20

“I feel like Persaphone trying to remember the bird calls.” This series was conceived as autumn went on and the sunny days of picking wildflowers and watching hummingbirds in quarantine became distant memories.

This series was my first major exploration of analog CRT TV textures, and each piece uses a different method. By the fifth and final piece in tbe series, I had been developing the CRT lightpainting technique and first applied it publicly in that piece.

This was my first set to be minted on the Blockchain, and can be found on Rarible. It felt right for a series about the fleeting nature of summer to exist purely as electrical impulses and blocks of data.

The odd one out in terms of aspect ratio and the genesis of my CRT light painting

SPACE FLOWERS

May - September 2020

When the Coronavirus arrived, and New York shut down, I turned to nature. Flowers, celestial bodies, vivid colors; I was practically spitting out butterflies. This period was also the first time I used an analog CRT texture, but wouldn’t circle back to that for a little while.
